KINGDOM PRIORITIES
Anxiety is real and common—every single person faces it. We worry over big things and little things. We stress about what we can and cannot control, and we fret about what might or might not happen. Worry consumes us over basic needs like food, drink, and clothing, as well as tomorrow’s uncertainties. Things happen. But Jesus give us some perspective: God is in control. He tells us not to worry, and to sort our priorities. When God’s ways become our main pursuit, the Father promises to add what we truly need. Our anxiety shrinks when our focus shifts from what we lack to One who provides.
"Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” is not a promise of no problems or endless wealth; it is a lesson in reordering our priorities. To seek the kingdom is to pursue the reign of God: His rule in our hearts, His justice in our relationships, His holiness in our conduct, and His mission in the world. To seek His righteousness is to hunger for the fullness of faith in Christ and the transformed life that flows from it. When we put God’s kingdom first He takes care of the rest. Maybe not how we pictured, but always sufficiently and faithfully.
Being preoccupied with worry is not the same as responsible living. Jesus is not telling us to stop working, planning and providing. Instead, He is warning us against a mindset where fear and uncertainty dominate our thoughts. The anxiety that rises in our hearts when provision feels uncertain is not itself bad as long as it does not consume us and drive our actions. God knows our necessities of life, and He wants us to give our worries over to Him. It is hard—especially when bills pile up, the fridge looks empty, or the future feels shaky. But Jesus assures us our heavenly Father already knows exactly what we need; He sees us, knows our needs, and cares about us.
Tomorrow carries its own burdens; we are told to leave those for tomorrow and live today. Worry often comes from trying to live in a future that hasn’t happened yet. Each day has enough trouble of its own—enough to bring us humbly to God, enough to teach us dependence, enough to draw us nearer to the cross where our ultimate provision was secured. The One who gave His Son for us will not withhold what we truly need. Seek first His kingdom, and trust Him with the rest.
Faithful Father,
You know every need of our lives before we speak it. You see every anxious thought before it forms. We come to You with all our worries about tomorrow, about today, and the ones we don’t even say out loud. We confess the ways anxiety has taken root in us over provision, over the future, and over what tomorrow may hold. Forgive us for seeking first the things of this world rather than Your kingdom and Your righteousness. Forgive our unbelief and the ways we have trusted circumstances more than You.
Thank You that You already know what we need, and You care more than we can imagine. Thank You for Jesus, who carried our heaviest burdens to the cross. Help us seek Your kingdom first above everything else. Quiet our anxious thoughts and remind us that tomorrow belongs to You. Give us grace to live one day at a time, trusting You and resting in Your love.
Help us to seek You first in all things. When we feel anxious about the future, remind us that You are already there. Strengthen our faith, quiet our fears, and let us rest in the assurance that You provide. Turn our anxieties into prayers of thanksgiving for Your faithfulness.
Amen.
How do we live without being consumed by anxiety about our needs and future? By seeking the kingdom of God. Today, turn every concern into prayer, petition (with specific requests), and thanksgiving. Gratitude reminds us of God’s past faithfulness and present nearness. When you feel worry about the future, pause and pray: “God, I trust You with tomorrow. Help me follow You today.” Knowing that God holds the future will bring you peace.
Let today be enough. God is already holding tomorrow.
