MEETING GOD IN THE QUIET
Sometimes we really like attention. Everyone wants to be noticed and respected, highly regarded and honored. We seek it in our positions at work, at church, and in the community. To be the boss, to be a religious leader, to be a political representative, etc., are sought after positions because they bring prestige and power. We want others to think highly of us because of who we are and what we do. Jesus warns us that prayer is not the time for that. Prayer is not performance - it is relationship. Our prayers should be about speaking with God, not about being noticed by others.
Our spiritual lives are not measured by visibility. God’s work often begins in silence before it appears in public. Just as seeds grow underground before they break the surface, faith grows in the quiet place of prayer. Jesus teaches that God “who sees in secret” responds to these hidden moments. The image Jesus gives is deeply personal. Secret prayer is where faith becomes personal. Closing the door allows us to step away from distraction, expectation, and the need for approval. In such a setting prayer becomes an intimate and honest conversation with a loving Father who already sees and knows us. When we pray privately, there is no audience to impress, no expectations to fulfill. It is a moment of raw honesty between us and the One who already knows everything and is just waiting for us to trust Him.
God rewards secret prayers, because it proves genuine dependence and love for Him alone, not for show. The reward isn’t always dramatic (though sometimes it is—breakthroughs, guidance, healing); often it’s the quiet riches of knowing God more deeply: strengthened faith, renewed mind, inner peace that sustains through trials, and a life increasingly aligned with His will.
Some of the most powerful spiritual moments happen where no one else can see them. Spiritual transformation begins in quiet prayer. Jesus modeled this: He often withdrew to desolate places or rose early to pray alone. The most authentic prayer isn’t about impressing others or even about eloquent words; it’s about being real before God, who already knows our hearts and longs for our company.
Abba Father, Faithful Jesus, Loving Spirit,
You see into the hidden places of our hearts, and You invite us into sacred communion with You, where no one sees us but You. Forgive us for times our prayers have been performative—more for others’ ears than Yours—or when we have neglected quiet time with You in favor of busyness. Forgive us when prayer becomes rushed, public-facing, or neglected. Thank You for Jesus, who prayed in secret and taught us to seek You intimately.
Draw us into a quiet place where we can meet You honestly. Remove the distractions and pressures that keep our prayers shallow or hurried. Teach us to speak with You openly and freely. Help us find joy in the hidden moments where our hearts meets Yours. Ignite in us a hunger for that hidden place where we can pour out our hearts without pretense. Help us value time alone with You above all else. As we seek You in the quiet, reward us with Your presence; reward us with deeper fellowship and transformed character that brings wisdom, strength, and joy.
Deepen our faith as we learn to seek You privately. May our hidden moments with You shape every part of our lives. May our secret prayers be honest, persistent, and full of trust. Let secret prayer become the foundation of our lives, transforming us from the inside out for Your glory.
Amen.
God does not need impressive words. He desires sincere hearts. When we pray privately, something beautiful happens: we stop trying to impress and start learning to trust. In the hidden place, we bring our fears, hopes, confusion, and gratitude to God without filters. Secret prayer cultivates humility, guards against pride, and fuels faithfulness. And like magic, what happens in the hidden place shapes what overflows publicly. Today, set aside 10 minutes to pray in complete quiet. Remove all distractions (phone, tablet, music, etc.), close the door, and sit in silence before speaking. Then talk to God honestly about your day, your worries, and your gratitude. Do not rush or try to say impressive words. It may be awkward, but the more you practice it the better you will get at it, and you will feel God's presence as He listens.
When we meet God in hidden places, our unseen conversations shape our hearts, guide our decisions, and strengthen our faith. In the quiet meeting place with God we discover that prayer is all about learning to be honest with ourselves before God as well as hearing Him, knowing Him and being known by Him. Secret prayer is the heartbeat of authentic faith. Jesus calls us into to the hidden place where no one watches but God. This isn’t isolation; it’s intimacy. Jesus lived this: His ministry flowed from solitary prayer with the Father. Through the Spirit, we too can experience prayer not as duty but delight—a secret place where we meet Abba, are known fully, and completely changed.
